A Rapid and Efficient Method for Purifying High Quality Total RNA from Peaches (Prunus persica) for Functional Genomics Analyses Biol. Res.
MEISEL,LEE; FONSECA,BEATRIZ; GONZÁLEZ,SUSANA; BAEZA-YATES,RICARDO; CAMBIAZO,VERONICA; CAMPOS,REINALDO; GONZALEZ,MAURICIO; ORELLANA,ARIEL; RETAMALES,JULIO; SILVA,HERMAN.
Prunus persica has been proposed as a genomic model for deciduous trees and the Rosaceae family. Optimized protocols for RNA isolation are necessary to further advance studies in this model species such that functional genomics analyses may be performed. Here we present an optimized protocol to rapidly and efficiently purify high quality total RNA from peach fruits (Prunus persica). Isolating high-quality RNA from fruit tissue is often difficult due to large quantities of polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds that accumulate in this tissue and co-purify with the RNA. Here we demonstrate that a modified version of the method used to isolate RNA from pine trees and the woody plant Cinnamomun tenuipilum is ideal for isolating high quality RNA from the...

A rapid method for an offline glycerol determination during microbial fermentation Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Kuhn,Jennifer; Müller,Hagen; Salzig,Denise; Czermak,Peter.
Background The purpose of this work was to find a rapid method for glycerol detection during microbial fermentations. The method requirements were, first, to avoid sample pretreatment, and second, to measure glycerol precisely especially out of fermentation broth. Results This was achieved by combining two reaction principles - the Malaprade reaction and the Hantzsch reaction. In the Malaprade reaction, glycerol is converted into formaldehyde. This forms a dye in the Hantzsch reaction after which adsorption is than detected. The subsequent assay was investigated with two different fermentation media, a chemically undefined and a chemically defined media, used for Pichia pastoris fermentation. In both media, as well as in real fermentation samples, glycerol...

A rare but successful reproductive tactic in a social wasp (Hymenoptera:Vespidae): Use of heterospecific nests RChHN
DE SOUZA,ANDRÉ R.; SILVA,NEWTON J. J.; PREZOTO,FÁBIO.
Successful heterospecific use of abandoned nests has been reported in birds. Although the same behavior has been observed in wasps, the success of such tactic has not been demonstrated. We described two cases in which the social wasp Polistes versicolor successfully reared its brood in empty nests of the social wasps Mischocyttarus drewseni and Mischocyttarus cassununga (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). We showed that this is a rare but a viable reproductive tactic for both solitary and associative foundress. Unlike birds, which use heterspecific nests very similar to their own, wasps are able to use heterspecific nests that do differ from their own.

A Rare Case of Unilateral Third Head of Sternocleidomastoid Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Cherian,Saju Binu; Nayak,Satheesha.
A rare case of unilateral third head of sternocleidomastoid muscle was noted during routine dissections for undergraduate medical students. The additional third head originated from the middle third of the clavicle and joined the normal two heads (sternal and clavicular) of the muscle in the middle of the neck. The insertion and nerve supply of the muscle was normal. This case may be important for head and neck surgeons and for plastic surgeons doing muscle graft surgeries.

A Rare Lymphatico-Venous Communication Associated with Duplication of Thoracic Duct International Journal of Morphology
Anu,Vinod Ranade; Rajalakshmi,Rai; Latha,Venkatraya Prabhu; Mangala,Kumaran.
An unusual presentation of the duplication of thoracic duct with a rare lymphatico- venous communication was found during the routine dissection for undergraduate students. The thoracic duct duplicated at the level of T12 vertebra. Normally thoracic duct opens into the junction of left internal jugular vein and subclavian vein. On the right side of the neck, the right lymphatic duct conveys the lymph from the head and neck, the upper extremity and the right side of the thorax to the right innominate vein. Here, the duplicated thoracic duct on the left side opened directly into the inferior vena cava. The above case is discussed with regard to its development, incidence, and clinical significance

A Rare Pattern of Brachial Artery Variation: Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Jacomo,A. L; Martinez,C. A. R; Saleh,S. O; Andrade,M; Akamatsu,F. E..
Unlike the venous system, variations in arterial anatomy are less frequent and most of them affect visceral arteries. In limbs, variations of the brachial artery are the most reported and at least six different patterns have been described so far. The commonest is the superficial brachial artery which lies superficially to the median nerve. Much less prevalent are the high origin of the radial artery (brachioradial artery) or the existence of a doubled brachial artery (accessory brachial artery). We present a previously undescribed pattern of brachial artery variation. During dissection of the right upper limb of a 60 year-old male embalmed cadaver, we found the bifurcation of the brachial artery in the proximal portion of the middle third of the arm. Its...

A Rare Termination of Left Common Facial Vein into Left Subclavian Vein: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Prakash,Babu B; Bhagath,Kumar Potu.
During routine dissection of head and neck, an unusual drainage in pattern of the veins on the left side of the face was observed in an adult male cadaver. In the present case, he superficial temporal vein united with maxillary vein to form retromandibular vein within the substance of the left parotid gland. The anterior division of retromandibular vein joined with facial vein to form common facial vein that drained into left subclavian vein directly. Knowledge of such variations is important for surgeons performing head and neck surgeries. Facial veins are often grafted into carotid endarterectomy

We report an uncommon anatomical variations of the left renal vein was found on dissected specimen in an elderly male cadaver: a retroaortic left renal vein. No other vascular anomalies were noted in this specimen. The anomaly result may be related to a particular pattern of left inferior vena cava. The abnormality have to be known for it may be undetected or be misleading in imaging. This anatomical curiosity should be kept in mind by clinicians and academics that may manipulate this anatomical area

A Rare Variation of the Testicular Blood Supply by the Deferential Artery International Journal of Morphology
Zheng,Yong; Yuan,Qianqian; He,Xin; Lei,Yueshan.
Any compression of testicular arteries may lead to loss of spermatogenesis and gonadal hormone production, existence of the variational arteries is accountable in cases of vasoligation, orchidopexy and other surgical approach on them. Anomalies of the testicular blood arteries were observed during dissection of the pelvic cavity in a 68-year-old male cadaver. This report describes a very rare case of lack of testicular arteries. For the blood supply to the testis, thick deferential arteries form some vascular winding and loops and course accompanied by deferent duct to the testis. This case report would serve as ray of light for knowledge of the possible variations of the testicular arteries during surgical procedures.

A real-time PCR genotyping assay to detect FAD2A SNPs in peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Barkley,Noelle A; Wang,Ming Li; Pittman,Roy N.
The high oleic (C18:1) phenotype in peanuts has been previously demonstrated to result from a homozygous recessive genotype (ol1ol1ol2ol2) in two homeologous fatty acid desaturase genes (FAD2A and FAD2B) with two key SNPs. These mutant SNPs, specifically G448A in FAD2A and 442insA in FAD2B, significantly limit the normal function of the desaturase enzyme activity which converts oleic acid into linoleic acid by the addition of a second double bond in the hydrocarbon chain. Previously, a genotyping assay was developed to detect wild type and mutant alleles in FAD2B. A real-time PCR assay has now been developed to detect wild type and mutant alleles (G448A) in FAD2A using either seed or leaf tissue. This assay was demonstrated to be applicable for the...

A reassessment of the phytogeographic characterization of Temperate Pacific South America RChHN
SANTELICES,BERNABE; MENESES,ISABEL.
In 1980, a study of geographic distribution patterns and geographic affinities of benthic algae of temperate Pacific South America (5-55 ºS) provided a first characterization of these coasts. High endemism and limited floristic exchange with the Tropical Pacific and with islands in the South Pacific at various distances from the continent were two outstanding features of the marine flora. A partial blockage of species exchange partially accounted for a peculiar latitudinal pattern of species richness that increases with increasing latitudes. In contrast, there was reduced species richness in comparison with other climatically equivalent regions that have contact with more effective routes of migration. Over the last two decades, more than 30 taxonomic and...

A Research of Peripheral Blood Cells Annually in Bufo Bufo gargarizans International Journal of Morphology
Liu,Chongbin; Xia,Chengqiang; Xie,Zhaohui; Jiao,Yang; She,Qiusheng.
The present paper deals with a histological study of the blood cells of Bufo Bufo gargarizans in different months: January, March, May, July and October. The methods used are by routine blood smear in Wright stain and observation in vivo. We found that in smears and in vivo two main types of cells of the red cells: mitotic as well as amitotic. While amitotic occurs all the year round, particularly in July, mitosis so far had been seen only in July. It is also found that there are plenty of neutrophils in the blood cells of Bufo Bufo gargarizans, furthermore, the nuclei of these cells are polymorphic, especially in January and March. Meanwhile, the concentration of red cells was lowest in May and highest in January; The concentration of white blood cells...

A review of the chemistries of redox sensitive elements within suboxic zones of oxygen minimun regions Gayana
Kenneth W,Bruland.
This presentation is a review of the chemistries of redox sensitive elements within suboxic regions of extreme oxygen minimum zones. Suboxic regions are defined as extreme oxygen minimum zones with dissolved oxygen < 10 µmol kg-1 (and likely <5 µmol kg-1), and with clear evidence of nitrate reduction, but not sulfate reduction. These are regions with nitrate deficits > 10 µmol kg-1 or N* values of _10 µmol kg-1. Suboxic regions predictably occur in the tropical and subtropical eastern Pacific and the Arabian Sea. These suboxic zones are important in the global biogeochemistry of nitrogen and act as an important sink for fixed nitrogen. Minor and trace element redox couples such as iodate/iodide and leachable particulate Mn/dissolved Mn undergo...

A review on plant importance, biotechnological aspects, and cultivation challenges of jojoba plant Biol. Res.
Al-Obaidi,Jameel R.; Halabi,Mohammed Farouq; AlKhalifah,Nasser S.; Asanar,Shanavaskhan; Al-Soqeer,Abdulrahman A.; Attia,M. F..
Abstract Jojoba is considered a promising oil crop and is cultivated for diverse purposes in many countries. The jojoba seed produces unique high-quality oil with a wide range of applications such as medical and industrial-related products. The plant also has potential value in combatting desertification and land degradation in dry and semi-dry areas. Although the plant is known for its high-temperature and high-salinity tolerance growth ability, issues such as its male-biased ratio, relatively late flowering and seed production time hamper the cultivation of this plant. The development of efficient biotechnological platforms for better cultivation and an improved production cycle is a necessity for farmers cultivating the plant. In the last 20 years, many...

A Ricardian Analysis of the Impact of Climate Change on South American Farms Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Niggol Seo,S; Mendelsohn,Robert.
This study estimates the impact of climate change on South American agriculture taking into account farm adaptations. The study used a Ricardian analysis of 2300 farms to explore the effects of global warming on land values. In order to predict climate change impacts for this century, were examined climate change scenarios predicted by three Atmospheric Oceanic General Circulation Models (AOGCM): the Canadian Climate Center (CCC), the Centre for Climate System Research (CCSR), and the Parallel Climate Model (PCM) models. Several econometric specifications were tested, and five separate regressions were run: for all farms, small household farms, large commercial farms, rainfed farms, and irrigated farms. Farmland values will decrease as temperature...

A roadmap to directed enzyme evolution and screening systems for biotechnological applications Biol. Res.
Martínez,Ronny; Schwaneberg,Ulrich.
Enzymes have been long used in man-made biochemical processes, from brewing and fermentation to current industrial production of fine chemicals. The ever-growing demand for enzymes in increasingly specific applications requires tailoring naturally occurring enzymes to the non-natural conditions found in industrial processes. Relationships between enzyme sequence, structure and activity are far from understood, thus hindering the capacity to design tailored biocatalysts. In the field of protein engineering, directed enzyme evolution is a powerful algorithm to generate and identify novel and improved enzymes through iterative rounds of mutagenesis and screening applying a specific evolutive pressure. In practice, critical checkpoints in directed evolution...

A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study on the Appendage Morphology of Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Daña, 1852) (Crustácea:Decapoda: Astacoidea) International Journal of Morphology
Mustafa Harlioglu,Muzaffer.
This study compares the morphology of rostrum, pereipods 1,2,4 and mouthparts of juvenile Astacus leptodactylus with those oí Pacifastacus leniusculus. Differences in morphology were observed, in particular with regard to the mouthparts e.g. including setal armature and number of teeth on the mandible. In general, the shape of the rostra in the two species is similar in that both taper to a point with a pair of sharp spines distally. Laterally the rostrum of A. leptodactylus is bordered by a regular row of setae, which is not so well defined in P leniusculus. The observations also showed that in addition to an increase in size, changes in morphology in the feeding apparatus between the developmental stages of the two species were present. It was concluded...

A scenario for the conversion of Common Agricultural Policy payments in Spain after the 2011 legislative proposals Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Andrés,Silvia; García,José M; Compés,Raúl.
S. Andrés, J.M. García, and R. Compés. 2013. A scenario for the conversion of Common Agricultural Policy payments in Spain after the 2011 legislative proposals. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2):291-306. This paper evaluates the impact of a new model of agricultural policy outlined in legislative proposals issued by the European Commission in October 2011 and estimates its effects on agricultural aid in Spanish Autonomous Communities compared with 2009. Therefore, the OECD agricultural policy-index system was used. To the extent that transversal criteria are applied, which support the transfer of aid between territories, the results suggest that changing the payment assignation model would involve a redistribution of aid towards areas that currently least benefit from...
